De plaat van het jaar 2018 is wat mij betreft ‘Golden Hour’ van Kacey Musgraves. Na wat geflopte platen kwam ze in 2013 met de langspeler ‘Same Trailer Different Park’ door deze plaat ontdekte ik haar mooie en interessante teksten en dito muziek. Opvolger ‘Pageant Material’ uit 2015, vond ik zelfs nog wat beter. Tussendoor verscheen er nog een leuke kerstplaat. In 2018 verscheen om precies te zijn op 30 maart haar derde reguliere plaat, de belangrijke derde plaat. Voor deze plaat schakelde ze de hulp in van producers Daniel Tashian en Ian Fitchuk. Met deze heren en Natalie Hemby schreef ze de nummers voor het album en nam ze de nummers op in 2017. Musgraves vertelde het volgende over het schrijfproces:

“I have a lot more love songs this time around, and I’ve never been one to write a love song and really feel it.” “That probably sounds like the most depressing thing ever. [But] I’m coming off getting married and being in this golden hour of my personal life, where all these things are finally coming to fruition. I found myself inspired to write about this person and all these things he brought out in me that weren’t there before.”

Die persoon is de singer/songwriter Ruston Kelly met wie ze dus in 2017 trouwde. Op ‘Golden Hour’ is de countryvibe niet meer zo aanwezig als op haar vorige platen. Met deze langspeler kiest Musgraves voor een wat meer pop country geluid. Rolling Stone omschreef het album als een cosmic soft-rock met af en toe wat disco accenten.

Opener van de plaat is het prachtige ‘Slow Burn’ waarop eerst alleen een akoestische gitaar te horen is met de prachtige zang van Musgraves. Halverwege het nummer komt de rest van haar band erbij.
‘Oh What A World’ begint met een vocoder zoals Daft Punk deze vaak gebruikt in hun nummers. Het nummer ‘Mother’ gaat over de moeder van Musgraves. Ze schreef dit nummer, het korste, van de plaat tijdens een LSD trip op een mooie zomeravond. Een van de hoogtepunten van het album is ‘Happy & Sad’. Het nummer lijkt qua thema op ‘Silver Lining’ van haar album uit 2013. En gaat over het moment dat alles goed gaat, maar je dan ineens gaat bedenken dat het dan ook wel weer snel afgelopen zal zijn. Het nummer wordt helemaal geweldig als ze er nog een standje bij zet:

I don’t mind at all, no, I’m used to fallin’
I’m comfortable when the sky is gray
But when everything is perfect, I start hidin’
‘Cause I know that rain is comin’ my way, my way

‘Cause I’m happy and sad at the same time
You got me smilin’ with tears in my eyes
I never felt so high

And they say everything that goes up, goes up must come down
And I don’t wanna come down
No, I don’t wanna come down

Prachtig! De al eerder genoemde discoaccenten komen vooral naar voren op het nummer ‘High Horse’

“It was a freakin’ blast to do ‘High Horse.’ I mean, I had this title for a while, and just the thought of, you know, we all know that character that’s a little high on themselves. You know, they’re just a little bit arrogant. And I had this title sitting around for a long time and I have my own ideas who it’s about, but everyone has that character in their life, and, oh my gosh, it is the most fun ever”.

Op minuut 1:43 in de clip zie je een Trump look a like, dus daar zal Musgraves wel op doelen in bovenstaande quote.

Na het catchy ‘Velvet Elvis’ en het mooie ‘Wonderwoman’ is het tijd voor het titelnummer van het album ‘Golden Hour’:

The title is an aesthetically pleasing way to sum up how I feel about this time in my life right now. When I was making the record I was about to turn 29, I was planning my wedding, and I just found myself at the crux of a lot of really happy things that had taken forever to come to fruition, [like] meeting the right person.

Gevolgd door de zeer mooie afsluiter van de plaat ‘Rainbow’, en na het opzwepende ‘High Horse’ een fijn moment van bezinning. Musgraves vertelde in een interview met NPR.org, dat dit nummer al 6 jaar op de plank lag en nadat ze het had gespeeld voor Daniel Tashian en Ian Fitchuk waarbij ze volgens Musgraves in tranen waren moest dit nummer dus op de plaat. Het nummer gaat over de ‘silver lining’ het is nooit zo donker of het wordt wel weer licht.

When it rains, it pours
But you didn’t even notice
It ain’t rainin’ anymore
It’s hard to breathe when all you know is
The struggle of stayin’ above the risin’ water line

Well the sky has finally opened
The rain and wind stopped blowin’
But you’re stuck out in the same ol’ storm again

Kacey Musgraves heeft de plaat van het jaar gemaakt, van begin tot eind klopt deze pracht plaat. De plaat betekend ook de definitieve doorbraak bij het grote publiek. Heeft ze al 2 awards in de wacht gesleept in de categorie album van het jaar, bij de CMA (Country Music Association) en Apple Music. Daarnaast is ze nog genomineerd voor twee grammy’s. De afgelopen jaren zijn dus met recht ‘Golden Hours’ te noemen voor Kacey Musgraves.
